A report from the New York Time states that China is forcing Muslim minorities into labor.
The Times made the report after numerous families made claims that friends or family members had been sent to work.
The people being rounded up are mainly Muslim Uighur, although Kazakh and other minority groups have been targeted as well.
Officials in China claim that the labor is being performed by those arrested in connection to terrorism, but it is suspected that the Chinese government is using this as a scapegoat to imprison anyone who doesn’t demonstrably support the Communist party.
A previous report from the United Nations Human Rights panel showed “many numerous and credible reports” that as many as 1 million Uighurs were stationed in a “massive internment camp that is shrouded in secrecy.”
It is suspected that those interred are forced to work in manufacturing for China. While most of the goods produced are consumed by Chinese, there is speculation that some of the products made by forced labor could appear in the U.S.
